Ursulom, Kendall crowned singles champions Pat Cutt Special to the Record Courtenay lawn bowers filled the green the weekend of Aug. 2-3 with our own singles championships. Winners of this go on to represent the club at zone championships in September. Melie Ursulom and Pat Cutt went to the third level of tiebreakers for Melie to emerge the ladies champion. Both these Ladies will go to the zones as Pat is the defending champion.
The men’s event was a real thriller, with the final game having two unbeaten players in a deadly accurate battle. John Kendall and Archie Harris were tied after the first set of nine ends, which meant that whoever won the second set of nine would win the game. Ninth end, the score is 6-5 for Harris, Kendal is laying the two shots he needs to win and with his last bowl (of four). Harris moves Kendall’s bows and lies shot. Kendall has one bowl left, and he pick out the Harris bowl without moving the jack. He lies one…again a tie?? Very close measure for the second point, involving the umpire and … John Kendall is the new champion. Runner-up was also an exciting choice. Harris and a new member (but not a new bowler), Derek Kaufman, had won all of his games except for the loss to Harris, so he had lost only one set over the tournament and Harris had lost two. Congratulation John and welcome Derek. In other club results, Mixed Pairs have Archie and Linda Harris leading the pack with eight points and Pat Cutt with Gary Rhindress, Vern Greenhill and April Gilchrist, Frank Lo and Pat Chambers are all right behind with six points. Two winners from this event also go to zone championships. Webber has a few games yet to be made up but Greenhill is leading with 20 points. Second place is still in question with Dean Penny, Peter Harding and Frank Lo in the race. 2/2 Thursday 242 has Ernie Kassian in the lead with 21 points and the hot breath on his back is that ever present Vern Greenhill with 20.5 points. John Kendall, Dennis Perrier and Michael Lynch are still a threat as well with 18 points. Travellers have done well With Vern Greenhill, Dean Penny and Henri Saucier winning the Men’s Triples in Parksville on July 26-27. On the Ladies side of that competition, Pat Cutt, Irene Whitehouse and Melie Ursulom were fourth in the A event. Midweek activity on the “away” scene marks this first full week of August. Two teams of mixed triples are headed for Powell River on Wednesday-Thursday, for the Bowls BC Cash triples event. Pat Cutt, Jackie West and Sandy Tonnelier are headed for Vancouver and Stanley Park for the Provincial Senior Ladies Triples. Winner of this gets a trip to Montreal for the national event. Then Vern Greenhill, April Gilchrist and Dean Penny; Henri Saucier, Sandy Tonnellier and Jackie West: Pat Cutt, Al Hopwood and Janet Butler are off to Port Alberni for Mixed Triples, Aug. 9-10. Whew, I need a breather just talking about it! Oh yes, we missed one along the way: Melie Ursulom and April Gilchrist won the Ladies Pairs in Alberni on July 9-10. – Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club Leave a Reply. |
