Pat Cutt Daffodils are brightening the landscape with azalea and tulips soon to come….can lawn bowling be far behind? The Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club held the semi-annual general meeting on Sunday, April 10 with president Gaynor Bereza in the chair. Approximately 34 members were present to hear the plans for the coming season and vote on some, including a membership fee increase (first one in about 15 years or more) to $95 per season. This is still the best recreation deal around, all you can bowl for five months of the year, fresh air and sunshine and good company. The junior (under 18 years) rate is half the regular rate.
Coaching sessions for new bowlers will be available May 3-5 at 6 p.m., and if those hours are not convenient, the coaches (Irene Whitehouse, Peter Harding, Jackie West and Mike MacDonnell) can arrange a suitable time. Cost is $15 which will be applied to membership fees if you decide to join. Games chair Peter Harding has some new and different games to play to get the kinks out after the long winter, and Archie Harris and Jackie West also have some fun games brought back from their travels in the sun. Sign-up sheets for club events will be posted on Opening Day, Saturday, April 30 which will have a light lunch available and march around the green with the piper at 1 p.m. A work party to paint and locate the benches, install the awnings and all of that other seasonal stuff will take place on Monday, April 25, with Archie Harris, in charge. Tournament posters will also be posted as we get right into that part of the season May 7-8 in Nanaimo. Our first event for out-of-towners will be May 21-22 with the Anderton Nurseries Mixed Triples event. We had the full 32 teams here last year for this event, with 96 bowlers filling the green.
