Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club celebrated Canada Day in a big way as 45 members turned out to brave the “not very July” weather in red and white and flags all over. The first event was bowling “in the river”, where the players must first bump the jack (little white ball) into the river (10-foot wide strip in the middle of the green) and then try to place their bowls in the “river” as well! Bowling distance is about 21 meters or less, which is some different from the usual distance and not easy to do on a green as fast as ours. Great fun was had and then a stop for refreshment and back on the green for the Friday Aggregate before a potluck dinner which included barbecued salmon.
Aggregate points after six weeks are: Peter Cartwright and Dean Penny tied at the top with 13 points, followed by Mike MacDonell and Archie Harris with 12 points, finally a woman, to demonstrate that this is indeed a “co-ed” event, Pat Norrad and Bob Engisch have 11 points and then the Big Posse at 10 points in hot pursuit, Bill Whitehouse, Barb and Ron Boney, Pete Harding and Marguerite Sklarchuk. This will be a hotly contested race over the season. The travellers this week went to Parksville for the “Tenderfoot” tourney, a one-day, two-game event for the newer bowlers, as the team must consist of bowlers who have not bowled for over three seasons and must have a novice (this year’s bowler) on the team. Three teams consisting of Pete Harding, Pat Norrad and Henry Saucier; Dan and Gaynor Bereza with Gary Windress, and April Gilchrist, Sandy Tonnellier and Gord Norrad participated with the Pete Harding team taking second place. Next event is again in Parksville, the Mixed Pairs, and four teams (Archie Harris and Irene Whitehouse, Vern Greenhill and Melie Ursulom, Pat Cutt and Doug Bell, and Pete Harding and Carole Nelson) will try their luck. Apologies to Linda Meers as I put Linda Harris in her place in the Wednesday Mixed report from last week. Lawn bowlers celebrate Canada Day in style – Comox Valley Record Leave a Reply. |
