Special to the Record Courtenay Lawn Bowling is getting ready to wind down for the season, but not quite yet….we still have a few events to complete. Courtenay lawn bowlers are leaving a good mark at out-of-town tournaments.
In Port Alberni on July 9-10 at the Ladies Pairs, April Gilchrist and Melie Ursulom took second place while Pat Cutt and Sandy Tonnelier were third as both teams lost only one game of four to the overall winners, Mary Mulligan and Frances Tester. Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club has the season rolling along. We have membership to date of 65 members of which six are Novice bowlers this year. There is always room for more, the coaches are always willing to help an interested participant. Leave a message at 250-338-8222 or stop any time there are bowlers on the green. The Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club is gearing up for yet another stellar season.
President Frank Lo, vice-president Dean Penny, past-president April Gilchrist, secretary Carolle Allan, treasurer Myrna Viers, games chair Peter Harding and greens manager Archie Harris have events in order to start in April. Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club is a busy place.
Vern Greenhill's foursome in fine form at Nanaimo's Centennial Fours Our travelers this week were Vern Greenhill, taking his “Green Team” to first place in Nanaimo’s Centennial Fours, May 23-24, 2014. He had a different crew this time – faithful Melie Ursulom with Ross Younger and Jackie West added to the mix. Dean Penny also tried the different green with Carolle Allen, Cath and Don Wiseman. For those who have never bowled and would like to try the game, there will be an open house on April 16 and 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you have concerns about back or knee problems, we have a tool, a UBI launcher. This item allows the bowler to remain upright while delivering the bowl.
Could be worth a try to be out in the sunshine, enjoying good company and a great game. Pat Cutt
Members compete at first open tournament; weekly leagues now underway. Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club has never before been so active so early. The green is in excellent condition for easy rolling and some of the groups have been rolling away for over a month now. Our spring this year has been optimum for early games. Plenty of activities planned for local green in the months ahead
Courtenay Lawn Bowling greens crew, Archie Harris, Dan Bereza and Mike Kearns, is hard at work getting the green ready for another busy season. Opening Day is Sunday, April 29, starting at 2:30 p.m. Interested visitors are welcome to march around the green with the piper and witness the raising of the flag for the 17th time at this location. (23rd at Kilpatrick) at the entrance to Bill Moore Park, and roll a few bowls. Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club celebrated Canada Day in a big way as 45 members turned out to brave the “not very July” weather in red and white and flags all over.
The first event was bowling “in the river”, where the players must first bump the jack (little white ball) into the river (10-foot wide strip in the middle of the green) and then try to place their bowls in the “river” as well! Bowling distance is about 21 meters or less, which is some different from the usual distance and not easy to do on a green as fast as ours. |
